Isn't "pass" in this sense just a complicated way of saying "give," meaning something like "give across a distance"? I don't know the first character in the Chinese (it's simplified), but the second one is "ball," so I think it's a compound meaning "give ball" or something like that.

Sort of, but there is a difference. Also delivering, distributing, donating, lending, transmitting and forwarding are forms of giving. By the way, I made a mistake with the Chinese characters. The word was supposed to be 传递, but "chuan qiu" is also a valid translation.
